Description
The visit to this neighbourhood and to this part of the city comes in a moment of change, after the demolition of the problematic blocks of “Tarrafal” and the on-going building work to rehabilitate the old neighbourhood of small houses. The houses built from scratch in black brick, have been already concluded and delivered. In this phase of construction it is easy to understand the qualities that Nuno Brandão Costa’s project wants to maintain – the small scale, the low density and, mainly, keeping the old neighbourhood relationships alive, that we can attest by the fact that almost all the residents wanted to stay in the neighbourhood. This work is also an example of the capacity of architects in managing small budgets to obtain maximum effect in comfort and dignity.
