Description
There is always ghost-like spaces in cities. Everyone knows that hospices exist but they rarely know the inside of them. This huge building, in particular, is a fine project by Manuel d’Almeida Ribeiro inaugurated in 1883. This building is the result of a major donation by Conde Ferreira and its project was inspired by the Hospice of D. Pedro II in Rio de Janeiro. An area of 12 hectares would allow besides the construction of the Hospital for the “furious” or the “alienated”, the construction of gardens, patios and vegetable gardens that distinguish the different methods of psychiatric treatment in this house. Conde Ferreira Hospital, kindly, opens its doors to the city more and more and to visit, is a way to demystify mental health and understand how much architecture contributes to the construction of this unique universe.
