Description
The installation of this barrack dates back to the beginning of the 16th Century, almost simultaneously with the construction of the Monastery. During these almost 500 years, it was of course involved in the military conflicts that most threatened the “Cidade Invicta” [never-beaten city] character that Porto is precisely most proud of. For its strategic location, it was decisive in the expulsion of Napoleon’s invading troops and in the fight that opposed liberals to absolutists. The origin of this barrack merges with the one of the monastery that, before having the name it is know for today, had also the name of São Salvador do Mundo and Salvador do Porto [Saint Saviour of the world and Porto Saviour]. The strategic position it occupies, so effective in times of war, offers a beautiful view over the city that in these more quiet times that we live in, is good to savour.
